Shattered Divinity
Media: graphite Actual size: 9x12"
"There are beautiful things in this world that hold much wickedness. Some are malevolent by choice, while others are so arcane that we simply cannot fathom their nature, and that makes them dangerous... sinister... evil. Do you even know that your journey is leading you to one of those things? And if you do, why are you continuing to go on? I know you're afraid. I can see it imprinted into your face, behind all the fatigue. Fear slips its hot, clammy fingers into the far-off corners of your mind, day by day. It's like you're afraid that your body might let you down and collapse in exhaustion before you have a chance to get to your destination. What is making you go on? What in the world can make one ignore such dangers and tribulations? There are a few things, I know. A hunger – for power, for wealth, for adventure, and yet I know with certainty that you wish for none of those things. Love, which is the easiest of explanations. Faith, which is the most logical – you wear the mark of a Singer on your arm. A dream, a pledge, a gamble… All these years have passed, and I still don't know for sure what drives you. But I can see that no matter how broken you are, there is a spirit that remains in you. And for as long as it endures, you will move on. You have strength enough for that."
This is a portrait of the central character from my novel (one of them novels, anyway...) He's been in existence for over 10 years, and has popped up in various drawings here and there without really being identified (such as Trinity:Faith). I figured it's about time he got his own tribute. I'm not completely satisfied with this particular drawing because he's turned out looking younger and more delicate than he should be, but oh well. :)
He's a musician by trade, whom unusual circumstance has forced to become a rebel/outlaw/reluctant hero. The above fragment is from the POV of a girl who sees random glimpses of this character's future (don't ask). The genre is urban fantasy, or as some call it, science fantasy. The setting is a far-future theocracy with vague Asian and medieval overtones. The drawing's title echoes one of the chapters, in which the main character suffers a major change of heart and ultimately realizes he has lost his faith in gods.
