Elegy (stage six)

 

In this stage I worked on the hands and the sword. Even though I'd changed the design of the sword from the original photo (see stage one), I still used

the photo as reference for the lighting. The hands were pretty straightforward - I shaded them using 2B and 2H, then redefined the highlights with a kneaded eraser. Each scale on the sword was shaded individually, then all over one more time, and finally highlights were added with a kneaded eraser.

 

I'd also decided to nix the vest pattern idea. I believed the drawing wouldn't suffer for the lack of it, but if I did try it and it ended up looking bad, there would be no reversing it. So I erred on the side of caution and left it alone.
