MIXED MEDIA TUTORIAL:

Artisans: Jeweler (stage five)

Next I used a soft peach color on the skin and beige on the background to smooth out the first shading layer. It may seem like doing this actually made the shading less obvious, washing it out. This is to be expected. You can always deepen the shadows later on by alternating watercolor and colored pencil layers.

If you've worked with colored pencils exclusively, you know that there are only so many layers you can apply. After some point, the wax simply refuses to go on and blend. You get unsightly wax bloom. Using watercolor on top of your pencil layer erases this problem, and you can achieve truly rich, smooth coloring effect.
