WATERCOLOR TUTORIAL:
Zephyr (stage four)
Using a soft brush (#4 for larger areas, # 1 for fine details) and light washes, I laid down basic colors. I use a combination of Yarka and Schmincke watercolors.
I don’t paint with watercolors the traditional way, that is, by blocking in the values, and leaving the lightest areas untouched. I prefer to build up the colors to desired depth using flat and graded washes, then add shadows, and lastly highlights using white acrylic. Not only does it make painting less stressful and give more freedom, but the white acrylic really makes the painting “pop”.
