Oil tutorial

Mischievous Joy (stage 4)

Mischievous Joy (stage four)

Time for the underpainting! This is what I often post in the Concepts gallery as WIPs. Here I armed myself with a few brushes, a #0 and a #1 for detail work, and a #10 for shadowing, and liquid acrylic in burnt umber light by Golden. With those I defined basic shapes and shadows. This underpainting will serve as a guide later on, plus the acrylic will help the oil paint stick better. Below are some details.

Usually I take a photo of the underpainting, so that I can later print it out and refer to it while painting if I'm not sure about something. Often I mess up a section, and that's when the WIP shot really comes in handy, helping me revert to what it used to be. I call it Photoshop Commands Put To Use In Real Life (sorta). ;)
