Mischievous Joy (stage four)
The next stage is the underpainting. For this, I armed myself with a few brushes, a #0 and a #1 for detail work, and a #10 for shadowing, and Golden’s fluid acrylic in burnt umber. With those I defined basic shapes and shadows.
The underpainting will serve as a guide later on, plus the acrylic will help the oil paint stick better. Below are some details:
Usually I take a photo of the underpainting, so that I can later print it out and refer to it while painting if I'm not sure about something. Often I mess up a section, and that's when the WIP shot really comes in handy, helping me revert to what it used to be.
